Migration can be considered as a positive experience depending on who moves where. More often than not, there are risks and sacrifices involve in this pursuit. Normally, those who migrate are people who were displaced due to war and poverty. There are also those who are just looking for greener pastures.
According to the Global Migration Group, the women, children, those who belong in ethnic groups, and those with insufficient or inadequate resources are the ones who are in a weak position during migration. They are usually deprived of the basic services they need, and are exploited and abused. New migrants are also economically and socially vulnerable. Aside from being susceptible to extreme poverty, they suffer from poor health facilities, public infrastructure and living standards. Interestingly, they are the type of people who fall for illusory ‘fast money’ opportunities like online gambling maybe because of bookmakers free bets and the like.
Gambling and Migration
It is said that migrants’ willingness in taking risks, as manifested on their gambling activities, can be linked to their migration decision. Moving to another place may put people in a precarious situation due to the uncertainties that their future jobs, living conditions and cultural adjustments may bring.
There is a correlation between gambling and migration. For instance, a poll involving migrant workers in China showed that at least one-third of the respondents had participated in lotteries. In addition, a greater number of them were found out to have engaged in other gambling activities such as online casino.
For Asian migrants, what drives them to gamble is their strong belief in luck and fate. In fact, research shows that depending on the Asian ethnicity, six percent to sixty percent of Asian migrants in the United States are addicted to gambling. Cultural factors are seen as the roots of their obsession to gambling, especially to online gambling.
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, an increasing number of migrant workers have been flocking to betting sites and casinos. Some of them have been so addicted to the point that they are accumulating piles of debts.
Interestingly, there are countries that impose certain limitations and restrictions to their citizens regarding online betting sites and casinos. If they can enforce these to their citizens, why can’t they do the same to the migrant workers who barely make ends meet?
