State Immigration Legislative Updates - Week of June 7, 2010
Pennsylvania makes move to keep undocumented immigrants out of the construction business. On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania House is scheduled to vote on a bill requiring contractors and sub-contractors to verify the status of workers before hiring them. The bill would apply to both state-funded and privately funded projects.
Immigration reform takes precedence in gubernatorial races. In Iowa, California, Georgia, and Florida the immigration debate is front and center in the race for governor. GOP and Democratic candidates alike are taking stances to distinguish themselves from their opponents.
Rep. Stephen Sandstrom continues to push for copycat legislation, but tweaked. The Republican representative from Utah continues to push his plan for Arizona-styled legislation to pass in Utah in 2011. Sandstrom insists they will tweak the Arizona law to eliminate the fear of racial profiling.
Arizona may see even harsher immigration laws in 2011. Senator Russell Pearce (author of Arizona SB 1070), said he may propose a law that will deny “anchor babies” citizenship. This means that children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States would be automatically granted United States citizenship.
