State Immigration Legislative Updates - Week of July 12, 2010

Arkansas citizens will not vote on immigration measures in November.  In October the Attorney General’s office approved a proposed amendment called ‘Secure Arkansas.’  The amendment would have required anyone over the age of 14 needing public benefits to sign an oath of citizenship.  It was circulated in an attempt to collect enough signatures to get the amendment on the November 2011 ballot.  The amendment did not gain enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Backlash to Fremont, Nebraska’s tough vote on immigration.  Those opposed to the new ordinance in Fremont making it illegal to hire or rent to undocumented immigrants are fighting back.  Former state senator DiAnna Schimek is fighting the new anti-immigration policies by trying to up support for organizations like the Appleseed Law Center that advocates for the poor.  She hopes through supporting organizations like Appleseed they can prevent other cities in Nebraska from passing laws like Freemont.

Summerville County Councilman is looking to make South Carolina’s anti-immigration bans stricter.  Despite South Carolina’s recent law banning small business owners from hiring undocumented workers, Summerville County Councilman Walter Bailey is proposing an ordinance similar to the one recently passed by Fremont, Nebraska.  The ordinance would “bar anyone in Summerville from housing or hiring illegal immigrants.”  The council’s initial vote on the proposal will be Wednesday.

Virginia lawmaker resolved to pass copycat legislation despite DOJ lawsuit.  Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart believes the Department of Justice lawsuit against the Arizona law will fail.  He challenges the DOJ to sue Virginia as well, claiming these immigration laws are on “firm footing.”
