National headlines on immigration this week include intersections between immigration, art, education, and the law.
Two documentaries present a human face to the immigration debate. The 800 Mile Wall portrays the day to day effects of an increasingly militarized border. The Other Side of Immigration synthesizes 700 interviews conducted in Mexico in an attempt to understand the mass migration of its citizens into the United States.
Immigration and Education. Gov. Deval Patrick (MA) announced that a legislative proposal allowing for undocumented students to pay in-state tuition after completing high school in Massachusetts will, most likely, not be approved. A similar legislation is already in effect in Nebraska, and is currently being debated in the State Legislature. This Tuesday James B. Milliken, President of the University of Nebraska, announced his support to current policy before a committee hearing.
Report prepared for the American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on Immigration calls for immigration reform. The report prepared by Arnold & Porter LLP calls for change in the “Department of Homeland Security, immigration courts, Board of Immigration Appeals, Circuit Court Judicial Review, representation, and system restructuring. “ The ABA will decide if it wishes to implement the findings next week. In sum, “the report recommends about 60 reforms, including hiring more judges, extending deadlines and a system make over.”
