Immigration in the News - Allison Bullard

Anonymous group distributes a list of 1,300 Utah residents deemed ‘illegal immigrants.’  A group calling itself “Concerned Citizens of the United States” mailed a list of 1300 purported undocumented immigrants to Utah government and media outlets this week.  The list labels these individuals ‘illegal immigrants’ and gives detailed information including address, telephone number, date of birth and even the due dates of pregnant women.  Utah officials are trying to determine whether the data came from within the government.

ICE director calls for states to leave immigration to the federal government.  On Tuesday, the director of ICE, the nation’s immigration enforcement agency said “immigration-the entry of people in and out of the country-is clearly a federal responsibility.”  He is encouraging states to not enact legislation like the new Arizona law because the power to enforce immigration laws belongs to the federal government.

In Arizona, judge sits for first hearing on the controversial immigration law.  On Thursday, a Phoenix police officer’s challenge to the new Arizona immigration law was heard.  The officer, David Salgado is asking that the law not be implemented until a determination is made on its constitutionality.  U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton did not rule yesterday on whether she will prevent the law from taking effect.  The next hearing is set for Tuesday.

On Wednesday, religious leaders and lawmakers talk about the ethics of immigration reform.  The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration invited religious leaders to discuss the ethics of immigration reform at a hearing on Wednesday.  The religious leaders were not the only ones talking ethics though.  Lawmakers opened the meeting with their own views on scripture and immigration.  The differences on scriptural interpretation between lawmakers and religious leaders led to stalemate on the best way to handle immigration reform.
