Immigration in the News - Allison Bullard

Arizona gets served with lawsuit from the DOJ.  On Tuesday the Department of Justice filed a law suit intended to prevent the new Arizona immigration law from taking effect.  The DOJ brought the lawsuit on the grounds that the Arizona state law is pre-empted by federal law on immigration.  The suit does not challenge the law on the grounds of racial profiling.  The federal government says that while states and localities can create laws that cooperate with federal law, “the Constitution forbids Arizona from replacing federal policy.”

States turn anti-immigration laws into voter registration push.  Many pro-comprehensive immigration reform advocates hope to do what California did in the 1990’s by getting a larger Latino turn out at the polls.  Activists in Arizona anticipate that Latino outrage to SB 1070 will drive them to the polls, so they can help reshape the states approach to immigration.

United Farm Workers use new tactics to change anti-immigrant sentiment.  On Thursday night Arturo Rodriquez, President of the United Farm Workers will be on the Colbert Report to discuss a new program inviting unemployed Americans looking for work to take on the physical labor done by undocumented immigrants.  The program is designed to combat the anti-immigrant sentiment that undocumented workers are taking jobs away from American jobs.

McCain speaks out in favor of deportation and against a path to citizenship.  McCain continues to use more and more anti-immigrant sentiment as his election draws near.  He stated he supports immigration reform that would deport those living in the country illegally.  His plan includes securing the border, creating a temporary guest worker program, and prosecuting any employer employing undocumented workers.
