ICE checks for undocumented workers in oil spill cleanup crews. In the midst of the oil spill catastrophe, the federal government puts energy into finding undocumented workers helping with the clean up. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Louisiana confirmed that agents went to command centers throughout the region to check for undocumented workers. They showed up unannounced, got the workers together, and asked for documentation of legal status.
McCain’s flip-flop on immigration: Honest or opportunistic? Senator McCain faces a re-election fight that could hinge on whether voters believe his change on immigration issues is honest and based on pure motives. McCain has gone from “the border fence is least effective” option for immigration reform to calling for Obama to send more troops to the border and asking Congress to “complete the danged fence”.
Arizona state Treasurer calls for creation of immigrant ‘tent city.’ Dean Martin, Arizona Treasurer and candidate for governor, anticipates a large number of undocumented immigrants to be arrested under the new immigration law. Once the law takes effect in July and arrests take place, Martin fears the jails will not hold these offenders and the budget does not afford many solutions. So, Martin suggests a tent city like the one in Maricopa County that holds DUI offenders and jail overflow.
Costs to become a legal immigrant on the rise. The office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services plans to increase fees for green cards and visas beginning this summer. It is the first increase since 2007 and comes as a result of a shortfall in revenue at the agency and a decline in applications.
